Banana! Or: can women be funny when falling over a banana?

My inspiration for this one comes from something I read in an interview with 3 famous (male) clowns in the Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin of Februar 2017. In the interview these 3 men explain why they think it's harder for women to be funny/ to be a clown.

So let's compare this video of Clara Cenoz with the quote (my translation) of Berhard Paul:
"Men respect women, when a woman falls over a banana peel, a man will not laugh about her, but instead he will help her to get up again."
So the fact that you 'respect' a woman explains why it's harder for a female clown to get some good laughs. Okay. But Clara Cenoz does it. So how does she do it? She builds up the gag well and has a nice, positive, naive energy.  She says in several ways: "no, no, I am not going to be so stupid to hurt myself by falling over a banana", and then of course she does hurt herself, and it's getting a laugh. Why? Maybe because it is funny if someone overestimated himself or herself and can live with the awkward feeling afterwards... Is it harder for a woman to overestimate herself? Would not see why. To live with the stupidity afterwards? Is that easy for men?? Would not see why. That's one of the more difficult parts of the job for everybody I think. The stupidity comes in two flavours, one is lighthearted and we can laugh about it, one is heavy and we all suffer.
This kind of 'poor woman, let me help you' is not really the kind of respect I would say 2017's women would be happy to get. Today's feminists would probably more likely get themselves a matress and fall softly, like Clara does. So when she falls it's perfectly allowed to laugh about her supposed cleverness. Why not?

Clara Cenoz deserves some attention on my blog on women's day. She leads a clown school in Spain that seems to be super cool. And she makes clown numbers that are not dealing with being woman, they're just performed by a woman, and they're performed quite well.

  1. Thankyou Amber! Being very optimistic and naive can make you overestimate yourself, I think that doesnt depend on the gender, or maybe it does? Hope you had a happy Women´s Day, mine was rough but you just gave it a happy ending ;-) Love to you! Clara
